Focus on the Music
In June of 2001, Tropical Storm Allison flooded the Houston Symphony music library, destroying 152,500 pages of sheet music. A restoration effort, dubbed Focus on the Music, was launched during the 2003 season. The effort has been a resounding success. Thanks to the generosity of Symphony donors, the library’s holding have steadily increased: over the past five seasons, approximately 500 donors have contributes more than 700 works of music. Your continued support will assist us in restoring this vital asset and allow the Houston Symphony’s artistic distinction to continue.
Focus on the Markings
Once purchased, each new piece of music in the Symphony library must be prepared for use by the orchestra. Under the conductor’s direction, the Symphony librarians manually bow and mark the parts; a process which can take up to 50 hours. These valuable markings record the nuances of musical phrasing that define the conductor’s interpretation and create the Houston Symphony’s distinctive sound. The cost of this preparation can far exceed the expense of the sheet music itself, depending on its intricacy. Your funding for this process will allow us to continue to add depth and diversity to the library’s current holdings.
Focus on the Instruments
As we rebuild the music library, we cannot afford to neglect our instruments and equipment. Countless hours of practice and performance take their toll on the instruments, which must be periodically replaced or refurbished. To meet this need, Focus on the Music includes instruments and special equipment used by the Houston Symphony. Whether it be a cymbal stand for $200 or a new Steinway Concert Grand for $95,000, your donation makes a difference!
