To honor their oustanding work as music educators in the Houston community, the Houston Symphony was proud to honor Dr. Herbert Karpicke and Charles J. Stephens at the 2011 Salute to Educators concert on March 31, 2011. Karpicke--who led Houston's High School for the Performing Arts (HSPVA) to national and international prominence--was the recipient of the 2011 Jacob L. and Sophia Meyer Farb School Bell Award for Lifetime Acheivement while Stephens--Director of Bands at Waltrip High School-- received the 2011 Spec's Charitable Foundation Award for Excellence in Music Education.

In addition to the presentation of awards before each concert half, the evening included featured soloist, 2010 Houston Symphony League Concerto Competition Winner, Adam Wu playing Lalo's Symphonie espagnole for Violin and Orchestra as well the addition of the Houston Youth Symphony together with the Houston Symphony for a side-by-side performance of Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D major led by Associate Conductor Robert Franz.
