About this concert
Overview
Having spent much of his life under Joseph Stalin’s soviet regime, Shostakovich deeply resented the government’s control over an artist’s creativity. After his modernistic opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District was met with hostility and possible threats from the official Soviet newspaper, Shostakovich made his “comeback” with his ambiguously nationalistic Fifth Symphony. For years critics and music historians have debated whether or not the “Soviet pride” in the Fifth was genuine or not. Is it satiric rebellion or heartfelt contrition? While we may never know, you will be riveted experiencing this sweeping, melodic masterpiece.
