
Jeff Robinson studied bassoon with Rufus Olivier of the San Fransisco Opera Orchestra and later with K. David Van Hoesen at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. While in Rochester, Mr. Robinson performed with several nearby orchestras including the Rochester Philharmonic. In 1986, he moved to Albuquerque to become the Principal Bassoonist in the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. While playing with the NMSO he made many solo appearances and played in the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Santa Fe Pro Musica, and Oregon’s Sun River Festival. In 1992 Mr. Robinson accepted his current position as a section bassoonist and contrabassoonist in the Houston Symphony. He also served as Acting Principal Bassoonist for several years. Mr. Robinson is an active teacher who is on the faculty at the Texas Music Festival, the Chautauqua Institution, University of St. Thomas (Houston) and the University of Houston Moores School of Music. In 2004 he and the Houston Symphony premiered a new concerto for contrabassoon and piccolo that was written by his former student, Damian Montano. Mr. Robinson is an avid chamber musician and performs with the Chautuauqua Wind Quintet, the Greenbriar Consortium, Ars Lyrica Houston (baroque bassoon), the Winds of Texas, in addition to his own frequent recitals. He has also enjoyed playing in the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, the Festival Institute at Roundtop, the Grand Tetons Festival Orchestra, and the National Symphony. Most recently, Mr. Robinson has joined the faculty at the Chautauqua Institute in New York where he now serves as the Principal Bassoonist in the Chautauqua Symphony.
