2016 IMA HOGG COMEPTITION SEMI-FINALISTS HAVE BEEN SELECTED


About the Competition: 

The Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition is one of the foremost multi-instrument competitions in the world. Named to honor the memory of Miss Ima Hogg, a co-founder of the Houston Symphony, this prestigious competition is designed to identify outstanding young instrumentalists and support their pursuit of careers in music-making. Ten contestants will be selected to perform in the Semi-finals. Four finalists will advance to perform with the Houston Symphony to determine the winner of The Grace Woodson Memorial First Prize and a $25,000 award. This national competition is open to young musicians, ages 16-26 who play standard orchestral instruments and piano.

DATES

Semi-finals: 10 Semi-finalists will perform two concertos for our panel of judges. This portion of the Competition is free and open to the public. Look out for a Semi-finals schedule in mid-May! The four finalists will be announced directly following the performances.

Panel Discussion:  This panel discussion will explore both the conceptual and the practical elements of this important topic and attendees will have the opportunity to join the conversation by participating in a Q&A session with the panelists.

Finals Concert: 4 Finalists will perform a concerto with the Houston Symphony. This concert will be broadcast live on Houston Public Media New 88.7 and will be open to the public to attend, this event is ticketed.

2015 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition

The 2015 Competition took place at the Shepherd School of Music on the campus of Rice University from June 4-6, 2015. The winners of this competition were: 

First Prize, The Grace Woodson Memorial Award: 
Esther Liao, piano
$25,000 and performance at the Houston Chronicle Concert on July 11, 2014 at 7:30 PM






Second Prize, The Hoston Symphony League Award: 
Bixby Kennedy, clarinet
