Ima Hogg Competition

The 2014 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition will take place May 29-31, 2014 in the Shepherd School of Music's Stude Hall on the campus of Rice University. 

Named to honor the memory of Miss Ima Hogg, a co-founder of the Houston Symphony, this prestigious competition is open to young musicians who play standard orchestral instruments or piano. Through the support of the Houston Symphony League since 1976, this competition provides performance opportunities for aspiring musicians ages 13-30.

       May 29, 2014 -- Semifinals and announcement of four finalists, 9AM-4PM

       May 31, 2014 -- Finals Concert, Stude Hall, 7 PM

2014 Prizes:

  • First Place, The Grace Woodson Memorial Award: $25,000 and performance at the Houston Chronicle Concert

  • Second Place: $10,000 and performance at the Miller Outdoor Theatre

  • Third Place: $5,000

  • Fourth Place: $1,000

  • Audience Choice: $1,000

  • Artistic Encouragement: $1,000

Travel and Accommodations for Semifinalists
The Houston Symphony will provide both airfare and accommodations for all semifinalist contestants. We will provide for travel arrangements up to $500 (airfare is sponsored by United Airlines) and housing accommodations with host families from Monday, May 26th through Sunday, June 1st. Some meals will be provided by the host family and during competition events.
