With his signature Rocky-themed entrance, Mike has injected exuberance into the Houston Symphony with his creative programs, exciting musical arrangements, wry wit and quirky on-stage banter. Inspired by her album By Myself: The Songs of Judy Garland, the unrivaled Linda Eder salutes stage and screen icon Judy Garland, along with Principal POPS Conductor Designate Steven Reineke. Experience Eder’s lustrous voice as the Houston favorite showcases some of Garland’s greatest hits like “Me and My Shadow,” “Almost Like Being in Love,” and the song that made Garland a superstar, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

One of Mike’s favorite musical acts returns to
the Houston Symphony for his farewell season. Folk-rock duo AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle capture the essence of Simon and Garfunkel’s 1960s counterculture harmonies, complete with beautiful acoustic arrangements of standards like “Mrs. Robinson,” “Homeward Bound,” “Sounds of Silence” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

We’re rolling out the piano for a brand new concert honoring ultimate piano men. Celebrated pianist and modern-day crooner Tony DeSare is showcasing classic piano pop repertoire, featuring Gershwin’s jazz-influenced hallmark work, Rhapsody in Blue. Tony also salutes songs from great piano composers like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, as well as Billy Joel and Elton John.

This year, Steven Reineke is taking the reins of our Very Merry Pops celebration and dazzles you with holiday merriment. Our program includes classics like “Carol of the Bells” and a fresh interpretation of “Jingle Bell Rock.” In typical Very Merry Pops tradition, expect a “Winter Wonderland” which includes sweeping sounds of the Houston Symphony Chorus, beautiful new arrangements by our maestro—and of course, Santa!

5 CIRQUE GOES TO THE MOVIES

Originally conceived by Michael Krajewski in 2006, Cirque de la Symphonie has captivated audiences throughout the world. These astounding aerial acrobats, jugglers, contortionists and strongmen are back— but this time, they’re choreographing their brilliant acts to film scores performed by the Houston Symphony, including selections from Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, West Side Story, Titanic, the unforgettable theme from Chariots of Fire, as well as Star Wars.

Note: Sunday performance will be at 2:30 pm.

With its genre-bending, multilingual glory, Pink Martini’s sounds are “rich, hugely approachable, cosmopolitan yet unpretentious” (Washington Post). Join these amazing talents for a musical travelogue from a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro to a quaint piazza in Naples, Italy. Throw yourself at the band’s eclectic tunes like “Sympathique,” “City of Night” and “Brazil,” as well as songs from their newly released album, Je Dis Oui! Ari Shapiro, host of NPR’s All Things Considered, will join Pink Martini on stage—his only appearance on their extensive international tour. So come along with Pink Martini, special guest Ari Shapiro, Steven Reineke and the Houston Symphony for an amazing, not-to-be-missed evening.

It’s a night of espionage at the Houston Symphony as we celebrate the best of 007 with Bond & Beyond. Tony Award® winner Debbie Gravitte joins Mike and the orchestra to perform select works on the program, including Adele’s Academy Award®-winning song “Skyfall.”
